First meetings are a time to test the waters, to see if my style and way of working is what you are looking for. It is a time for whakawhanaungatanga; the process of establishing relationships.
It is where together, we go over what counselling is about. For example we will chat about confidentiality and the boundaries of the counselling relationship. In the first session you are invited to talk about what has brought you to counselling. If you are not sure where to start, that is ok as I will support you in sharing with me. At the end of the session I will ask some questions like...would you like to catch up again, if the session went as you had hoped, do you have any questions for me.
There is no expectation for counselling to continue beyond the first visit. Each person is unique - The counsellor and the way a counsellor works with you, needs to be the right fit for you, if it is not then together we can look at other options to support you. Above all, counselling continues because you decide it is what you want.
